Have your Ancestry DNA results been updated since August 2022? If that’s the case for you, read this informative blog to understand the changes to our ethnicity estimate results in our most recent update.
Are You New to AncestryDNA? If you are, it may come as a surprise that your results could fluctuate as science and technology improve. While there have been significant technical advances in using DNA for genealogy purposes, the field remains relatively new.
Ancestry provides ethnicity estimate results automatically for current customers even though their DNA test was completed years prior, which makes the experience much more useful and educational. I think this feature of Ancestry’s DNA testing service is pretty awesome!
Ancestry results typically go through a major update once every year, as well as smaller updates throughout the year, like changes to Genetic or DNA Communities. Once an update starts rolling out – which happened August 18 – it could take several days before everyone sees their newly calculated results.
Recently we’ve witnessed some very exciting new features being implemented such as SideView Ethnicity Inheritance and Chromosome Painter.
On your ethnicity estimate, scroll to the bottom of your list of regions to check their update date – if it has been modified since June, it should display “Updated August 2022”.
What has changed with Ancestry’s August 2022 Update?
As with previous updates, this one promises more accurate ethnicity estimate results. Among its main elements are new regions as well as improved accuracy across existing ones.
Now, our DNA can be compared with 1830 major regions, sub-regions and DNA Communities worldwide compared to just 150 regions available six years ago when I tested mine. This number seems astounding!
As there have been improvements, updates, and adjustments made across all six continent-level regions, most people should see at least minor adjustments to their estimates. If your ancestry comes from one of the newly added regions, however, major adjustments could occur as an algorithm will now select regions that best match up to your DNA to create your new estimate.
Though all upgrades in accuracy are welcome by customers, new regions being added this year has been particularly encouraging. Even if your ancestry doesn’t span these new regions, I strongly advise taking another look at your Ancestry results to see if any have undergone recalculation as part of this latest update.
My own did, and I will show an example at the bottom of this article.
New Regions Added in August 2022 With the August 2022 update, eight new regions were introduced across Africa, Asia and Oceania – two for Africa, four for Asia, and one split of an Oceanian region.
